GEORGE URIAS STRONG

“Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength and my redeemer.” On Saturday, February 18, 2023, at 4:00pm, the Lord whispered these words: George, your labouring on earth is finished. I have prepared a resting place for you. George Urias Strong was born on Friday, May 31, 1935, in Sunflower, Mississippi, to the late Clarence and Annie Mae Strong. George was the ninth of fifteen children. George was preceded in death by his wife, Frances, his sisters Rosie, Claudia Ethel, Florida, Ada, and Mary Dell, his brothers Tolbert Lee, Clarence Jr., James, Bud, Roland (Romeo), and his son George Jr. George was educated in the Sunflower County School System and briefly attended Mississippi Valley State University. George married Frances Walls on April 22, 1960. They moved to Dayton Ohio then Washington DC, where they raised their seven children. George was a devoted husband and father. George owned several businesses to include Strong’s Women Fashion and Capitol Hill Floor Company in Washington, DC. He employed many family members and friends. He also provided summer employment for some of the neighborhood kids. George provided for his family. He bought a RV and in the summers, he took his family on vacations for four weeks each year to include Sunflower, Chicago and Ohio to visit family. George loved cars and had plenty for his children to drive. He bought each child his/her first car and paid tuitions. He wanted his children to succeed in life. George gave his life to Christ on May 21, 1989, and became member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon. George was a favorite uncle to many nieces and nephews. Family and friends stated he was a good man, a man of faith, a pillar in his community, a real man, glad he was in my life, long time Buchanan Street neighbor and family, he taught us well, Deacon Strong helped me in my years coming up in church, I’m going to miss my friend, he was a great man, you will always be remembered and loved for eternity, the last time I saw your dad he looked good. He was a well dressed man and taught many young men and women how to tie a tie. George was very active until 2013 when he was diagnosed with dementia. George leaves to cherish his memory his six children, Diana, Rosie (Kenneth), Harry, Sharon, Tania and Eric; four siblings, Willie Bob, Floreece, Riley (Helen), and Dianne; eight grandchildren, Asha, Christopher (Mona); Mariah, Yazmine, Kenneth Jr., TaNia, Nicole, and Skylar; five great grandchildren, Ashlynn, Jayden, Jaleel, K’Lynn, and Londyn; a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins; and in-laws; his special friends Willis Hamilton, his McDonald’s Classic Crew, his Buchanan Street and Mt. Zion Baptist Church families.
