Ms. Maggie L. Gilchrist Smith

Maggie L. Gilchrist Smith was born July 4, 1940 to the late Maude E. Adams Gilchrist and James A. Gilchrist. Maggie received her education in the Public School System in Edgefield, S.C. She was one of seven children She moved to Washington DC in the 60s with her first daughter, Fannie Mae and in 1977, she had her second daughter Cindy. Besides being a great and loving mother to her daughters, she had a passion for helping others anyway she could. Over the course of time she became a caregiver of the elderly, fed the homeless and was a foster parent for many years. She later became a member of Grand Chapter Order Eastern Star (Alpha chapter #2). As a young woman, she gave her life to the Lord and she always kept the Lord first throughout her life. she was a strong woman of faith. She became a member of Holy Land Spiritual Temple Church in the 80's. She started a singing group in 1997 called "The Love Gospel Singers." She loved singing and one of her favorite songs was "Stop Right Now, It's Praying Time." She would be anywhere and break out in a song. Maggie loved serving the Lord and before her illness, she was a member of Heaven's Best Healing Church. Maggie enjoyed spending time, and having fun with her family. She loved shopping, travelling, cooking, music and she loved fried corn. Her children were very important to her and she did her best with them. She was blessed to stay on this earth to see three generations. Her grands and great-grandchildren gave her the name "Gigi" They loved her unconditionally and she gave the exact same love back. Maggie had a heart of gold and a strong personality. She came to understand that God takes us through some things in life to get our attention and to get us where he wants us to be. While her health was a challenge, she endured her condition with patience On February 15, 2018, the Lord called Maggie to her new beautiful home into His kingdom. Despite her illness, she fought it as long as she could for her loved ones. She leaves to cherish her memories two daughters, Fannie Mae and Cindy Smith both of Washington, D.C.; two sisters: Thelma and Luctria Williams both of Florence, S.C.; three stepsisters; Jessie Mae Adams (James), Juanita Martin (Willie), Diane Blair, four stepbrothers: Archie Lee Blair, Joe Blair (Betty), Charlie Blair (Mildred), Leroy Blair (Linda), sister-in-law; Josie Mae Gilchrist, all of South Carolina. Preceded in death by three brothers, Willie, James and Johnny Gilchrist, one sister: Kathleen Gilchrist Smith and two sisters-in-law; Cleo and Christiana Gilchrist. She also leaves to cherish her memories four grandchildren: Michael, Brittany, Denise and Sierra Smith of Washington, DC; great grandchildren: Ny'Zhir Smith, Noelle Kornegay, Ta'Quan and JayQuan settles; one God-child: La'Mere Smith, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.
