Joy Lynn Shorter was born on February 16, 1959 in Washington, DC to the late Luster Ree Shorter-Cook and the late William Ralph Shorter. She was the youngest of three children. She departed this life and entered into God’s loving care surrounded by her family on Saturday, June 1, 2019 at Sentara Heart Hospital in Norfolk, VA. Joy obtained her education through the District of Columbia Public School System. She became a licensed cosmetologist enjoying transforming people, but later found her true calling and gift of nurturing others. Until her unexpected illness, she was employed as a homecare provider with Farmer Home Healthcare. Joy Lynn, whom we affectionately called "Pup" was a beacon of light and laughter. A true fashionista, her personality and style dominated the room. Always wanting to be surrounded by her closest friends and family, Pup was our very own Angel (in the words of her favorite songstress Anita Baker). She loved the small pleasures in life, good food, good company, a gorgeous bag, shades and pair of shoes. Giving all her babies pet names, she coveted all of her children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews with an abundance of love and affection. Her undoubting support and push got many of us through and we are all the better for having her fierceness in our lives. Pup was an anchor to many and a friend to even more. Her commitment to staying true is a life lesson for those of us to keep in our hearts. How do you spell love? You don't, you feel it...Joy Lynn Shorter, God's way of showing us what loves is. Joy was preceded in death by her two brothers William Shorter and Terry Godwin. She leaves to cherish her memories one daughter: Jnele Shorter; two granddaughters: Kanier and Aubre’ Shorter; her father: Samuel Lee Cook; one sister: Angela Faith Shorter; two nephews: Desameux Shorter (Shannon) and Kani Shorter; two nieces: Ayanna Roberts (Damon) and Jennica Kirpes-Shorter; eight great nieces; four great nephews; one great-great nephew; her best friend of over 40 years: Janie Colbert; three goddaughters: Trynita Romeo, Mechelle Farmer, Jaquasha Williams; three godsons: Howard Bethea, Daquan Farmer, Corri Brown; and a host of other relatives and friends.
