Mrs. Lynne Wilburn Smotherson

Lynne Patricia Wilburn-Smotherson entered this life on July 15, 1951, in Washington DC and was called home by God on Monday, March 2, 2020. She was one of nine children born to the late Charlie J. Wilburn Sr. and Marguerite C. Wilburn. Lynne attended Our Lady of Perpetual Help Elementary School, Saint Cecilia’s Academy Catholic High School and the University of the District of Columbia where she graduated with a degree in early childhood development. She then went to work in the banking industry for over 20 years. After leaving the banking industry, she went to work for OAO Corporation. On August 8, 1997, Lynne married the love of her life, John H. Smotherson. The two resided in Upper Marlboro, MD when Lynne decided to start her own business and open Happy Times Daycare. She loved children and cared for them as if they were her own. After closing her daycare, Lynne began working for ASRC Corporation until her health began to fail in 2018. Lynne accepted Christ at an early age at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Washington, DC. She rededicated her faith and became an active member of Ebenezer A.M.E. Church, Fort Washington, MD in 1994 and generously gave to the Outreach ministry. One of Lynne’s favorite songs was “Going Up Yonder” Lynne was a very caring and loving individual; even to strangers. She loved her family and friends and was very selfless when it came to them. She was always planning family gatherings. Some of her favorite things to do were to spend time with her great nephew and great niece Damian and Imani Wilburn and to shop. She could never pass up a good shoe sale. It was rumored that she had amassed over 400 pairs of shoes and potentially multiples pairs of the same shoe. Lynne loved to go on vacations; she humored John by taking up golf because she knew it was something that he loved to do. Occasionally, you could catch them on their tandem bike on the Mt. Vernon trails. Lynne was loved by her family and friends and had an infectious smile that melted the hearts of all those that came into contact with her. Even though Lynne is gone from this life, she will forever be in our memories and will never be forgotten. Lynne is survived by her loving husband John H. Smotherson; son John T. Smotherson; grandson John A. Smotherson; her mother Marguerite C. Wilburn; her sisters Anne Marie Wilburn, Brenda A. Wilburn, Maureen A. Wilburn; brothers Robert M. Wilburn, Edward (Latasha) Wilburn, and Michael J. (Lashene) Wilburn; 5 nieces, 6 nephews, 2 great nephews and 3 great nieces; along with a host of other family and friends. Lynne was preceded in death by her sister Marguerite C. Wilburn, father Charlie J. Wilburn Sr, and brother Charlie J. Wilburn Jr.
