MARY LOU MOSES

Mary Lou Moses was born December 29, 1938 in Lee County, South Carolina to Henry and Eliza Wilson. She was affectionately known as “Ma”, a nickname that stuck with her throughout her life. Mary grew up in Mayesville, South Carolina and was educated in the Mayesville school system. Mayesville is also where Mary met Robert Livingston Moses. They were married on June 2, 1961. Eight children were born of their union. In the early 1970s, Mary and Robert relocated from Mayesville to Washington, DC. Though she lived in DC for most of her life, she always called Mayesville her home. While in DC, Mary worked for many years as a housekeeper for The Carlton Hotel in downtown DC. She left that position in the 1980s to devote most of her time to taking care of her family, namely her husband, children, and grandchildren. She took great pride in being a homemaker. Although she would never say it, she was core that kept her family connected in more ways than one. On April 13, 2023, Mary answered the Lord’s call to enter her eternal resting place. She passed away peacefully at home in the presence of family. Throughout her life, most people would describe Mary as a God-fearing, easygoing woman of faith. She would give until there was nothing left to give, lend a listening ear without judgement, and she always had a joke to lighten tense moments. She was a nurturer and a protector. She was an excellent cook up until the day she retired from doing that and passed the baton to her grandchildren. She had a passion for fashion. She always made sure to have a ring for every finger and two or more necklaces for those times when she left home for family outings and, most importantly, her doctors’ appointments. She was a forgiving soul and preached the gospel of forgiveness to her children and grandchildren when they needed to hear it. She enjoyed the simplicities of life that included quality time, good music, and good laughs. In her later days, she was thrilled to get visits from her great grandchildren, who enjoyed spending time with their Nana. She will be missed, but her legacy will not soon be forgotten. Mary is preceded in death by her husband: Robert Livingston Moses, Sr., her parents: Henry and Eliza Wilson, her children: Ora Mae Moses, Jessie Mae Moses, and Diane Moses, one grandchild, and several other beloved family members. Mary is survived by three sons: Robert Livingston Moses, Jr., Henry Moses, and Archie (Violet) Moses, two daughters: Eliza Moses and Mayola (Joseph) Moses-Gray, 12 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and a host of other dear family members and friends. She will be remembered for her life well-lived.
